28S-CHW-107 is a ‘28S’ 4Ground Model Kit. ‘28S’ means this kit is highly detailed inside and outside with many pre-painted parts.
There are many possible reasons why these dwellings were coined ‘Shotgun’! Some say they are called this because you can shoot a gun right through the dwelling, as all the external and internal doors are directly aligned; others say it is a term coined just after the civil war denoting homes made from old ammunition boxes.
These dwellings were, in effect ‘Checklist Housing’ – almost all are a standard lumber milled length of 12ft wide approx. and literally all were made from pre-cut checklist components. Once all components were ticked off the list the carpenters knew there was just sufficient to construct a single dwelling.
A very interesting possibility is the term ‘Shotgun’ derives originally from a mis-understanding of an accented ‘Américain Français’. In English a ‘Checklist’ in the C19th would probably have been termed a ‘tick-list’, with the influence of French on American English speakers tick became check and in French ‘cocher une case’ as a ‘checkbox’ on a ‘checklist’. So just possibly ‘cocher une shack’ (a checklist house) was misunderstood/misheard as ‘Shotgun Shack’!
