In the medieval world, relics (objects belonging to or associated with holy men and women) played an important part in both Christian and Muslim devotion. Relics were not objects of worship, but acted as a focus for veneration, offering a visible and tangible connection to God. Relics were frequently the centrepiece of religious processions, especially in times of crisis. A city threatened with attack might parade its holiest relics around the walls, seeking spiritual protection and boosting the defenders’ morale.
