The Immortals was the name given by Herodotus to an elite heavily-armed infantry queued unit of 10,000 soldiers in the great army of the Persian Empire. The force performed the dual roles of both Imperial Guard and standing professional army.  

The name Immortals came from the warriors themselves immediately removed all of their killed and wounded from the battlefield heightening the illusion that they couldn’t be killed.  This Immortal is a leader and hero among his peers.
