Economic and military ties between Imperial Germany and the Ottoman Empire had been increasing in the decades leading up to the First World War, with the two visits by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1889 and 1889 serving as a strong catalyst for further co-operation. On the eve of the war, numerous German military missions were deployed to the Ottoman Empire with the goal of modernizing the ailing Ottoman army through weapons, sharing technology and the transfer of knowledge. By the end of the war nearly 25,000 German soldiers had been deployed to the Ottoman’s territories.
With German officers filling several prominent positions in the Ottoman’s military staff, the empire was able to fend off assaults by the British in the Dardanelles and Mesopotamia before the war turned against them.
