From the crumbling fire traps of the Subura to the less dangerous examples around the cattle market, the insula was Rome’s apartment and high-rise complex. With some examples standing in excess of five storeys and boasting taverns, bakers and less salubrious places to spend a denarius, this was affordable housing for the masses.
